If you have ever wondered about the origins of the universe and mysteries about what is in the universe, this is your opportunity to know more. The talk, by Dr. Massimo Pietroni (INFN Padova and Parma University, Italy) is meant for a general audience, with no prior knowledge of physics. The general public is invited, including high school students.

In modern days, cosmologists have succeeded to construct a model of the Universe that agrees with many independent observational evidences collected in the past 40 years. Yet, the model requires that most of the matter that fills up the Universe is of unknown origin. Moreover, it does not interact with any of the particles (protons, neutrons, electrons...) that make up our Solar System and our daily life: it is the so-called Dark Matter. In this lecture, we will review the observations that require us to postulate its existence, and explore some of the possible explanations of the puzzle.
