*POSTPONED* First Workshop of the U.S.-Africa Initiative in Electronic Structure (USAfrI)
The “U.S. – Africa Initiative in Electronic Structure” (USAfrI) is a new initiative of the American Physical Society and aims to create a collaboration between African and U.S. physicists with the potential of significantly impacting research and education in Africa.
*POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE*
Partnership in Electronic Structure is advantageous because nowadays it has become an essential part of materials related research with applications in many fields, and there is a network of capable researchers in Africa generated by sustained efforts over the past 10 years. USAfrI will leverage on these to plan two workshops, one in Africa where participants meet one another to identify common interests, and one a year later at Columbia University USA, followed by individual visits of Africans to U.S. research groups and user facilities in order to further develop potential working relationships. The workshop in Africa will be a 5-day workshop conducted at the ICTP East Africa Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR) premises at the University of Rwanda, Kigali. EAIFR is the partner institute of the ICTP in Africa. It is a category 2 UNESCO institute, funded by the Government of Rwanda and is poised to be, among other strengths, a centre for long-term support of computational sciences in Africa. The goal of the conference in Rwanda is to have U.S.and African scientists and students meet in person to present and discuss research results and ideas and develop concrete plans to work together.
Participation Information
African university lecturers in condensed matter physics and related fields, as well as postdoctoral fellows and advanced post-graduate students (masters and doctoral levels) are invited to apply to this USAfrI. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. Selection of participants will be based on their technical background. Priority will be given to applicants who will be presenting talks or posters of their current work in electronic structure. There is no registration fee for this conference. A limited number of grants are available to support attendance of some selected participants. To apply, fill the form here: https://forms.gle/pRmsbDP7tgvj4f6p8 and upload your CV there.
